Prospect, Del Mar fall in CCS hockey
Prospect and Del Mar each earned places in the Central Coast Section field hockey tournament, but both clubs have been eliminated.
Prospect opened with a 2-0 win over North Salinas, but the Panthers lost 1-0 to No. 3 seed Mitty to fall out of the playoffs.
Junior Stephanie Nichols knocked in two first-half goals to lead Prospect to the win over North Salinas. Junior Brooke Madsen handed out two assists, and junior Melissa Shouse had one.
But the Panthers couldn't score in the quarter final game against Mitty, losing a tough 1-0 decision. The clubs were locked in a scoreless tie at the half, but the Monarchs broke the tie with a second-half goal for the win.
The split at CCS left the Panthers 9-3-6 for the season. Prospect had posted a 5-1-6 record in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.
Nichols, Madsen and Shouse were joined on the Prospect squad this fall by field players Taryn Cater, Alex Harkins, Jen Hsu, Meghan Piper, Tiffany Bradley, Rachel Gagliasso, Jenn Iwagoshi, Christie O'Hara, Jaime Otaguro, Katie Williams, Jenny Crayford and Nicolette Vallorz and goal keepers Rachel Lamb and Talia Crema.
The Dons lost their opener at CCS, falling 1-0 to Lynbrook.
Del Mar battled the Vikings through a scoreless first half, but a second-half goal by Lynbrook turned out to be the difference in the game.
The Dons finished the year 7-3-6 after posting a solid 6-2-4 mark in the Santa Teresa division. The Dons ended up second in the circuit to Los Altos (7-2-3), thanks to 1-0 wins over Prospect and Leigh in the final week of the regular season.
Morgan McGill scored a first-half goal off a Lindsey Menkemeller assist to lift the Dons to the 1-0 win over the Panthers, then Menkemeller scored a first-half goal off a Breanne Condie assist to lead the Dons to the 1-0 win over the Longhorns.
Teaming with McGill, Menkemeller and Condie for the Dons were Kristina Calvert, Brittany Erwin, Deryn Fuller, Melissa Giles, Meghan Gordon, Lauren Holm, Ashley Magana, Michele Martin, Andrea McClendon, Hilary Mercante, Jamie Pereyda, Veronica Sykes and Lisa Warthan.
