Obituaries Norman Petersen
Norman V. Petersen of Monte Sereno died Jan. 23 at the age of 88.
A second-generation San Franciscan, Petersen was born Feb. 14, 1910. A longtime Boy Scout who achieved the organization's highest rank of Eagle, he was a summa cum laude graduate of the University of San Francisco, where he played on the basketball team and was president of his class. During World War II, Petersen served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander. Among his assignments were Leggetti Airfield in Arizona and Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay.
A professional accountant, Petersen was also an avid horseman. He competed in equestrian stunt riding and dressage and was a member of the Franciscan Lancers, a precision riding team. He also played polo.
Petersen and his late wife Fern raised their family in Palo Alto, then moved to Los Gatos in 1970, where Fern ran several stores, including The Pantry. According to his son, Petersen lived by the philosophy of "Be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind."
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Norman and Floriana Petersen of San Francisco; daughter Jerdone Petersen of Novato; and granddaughter Adriana Petersen of San Francisco.

Edward Oberzil
Former Los Gatan Edward Oberzil died Feb. 6 in Oregon, where he had been residing. He was 88.
Born Oct. 24, 1910, in Cleveland, Ohio, Oberzil served as a captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Italy during World War II. He worked for many years as a mechanical engineer for Lockheed and FMC. He lived in Los Gatos for many years with his first wife, Emily Eilmann Oberzil, who died in 1973. He married June R. Combs in 1979; the couple lived in town until June's death in 1996. Following a 1997 stroke, Oberzil moved to Forest Grove, Ore. to live with his son, Mark, and his family.
Oberzil was active in the Los Gatos Senior Center, the Happy Hoofers and the Phoenix Club and enjoyed restoring cars.
Survivors include son Mark Oberzil of Forest Grove; daughter Eleanor Leishman of San Francisco; and grandchildren Victoria and Nicholas Oberzil of Forest Grove.
