    Norman Petersen

Norman V. Petersen of Monte Sereno died Jan. 23 at the age of 88.

A second-generation San Franciscan, Petersen was born Feb. 14, 1910. A longtime Boy Scout who achieved the organization's highest rank of Eagle, he was a summa cum laude graduate of the University of San Francisco, where he played on the basketball team and was president of his class. During World War II, Petersen served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander. Among his assignments were Leggetti Airfield in Arizona and Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay.

A professional accountant, Petersen was also an avid horseman. He competed in equestrian stunt riding and dressage and was a member of the Franciscan Lancers, a precision riding team. He also played polo.

Petersen and his late wife Fern raised their family in Palo Alto, then moved to Los Gatos in 1970, where Fern ran several stores, including The Pantry. According to his son, Petersen lived by the philosophy of "Be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind."
