    Dr. Fred Wilson celebrates 20 years as senior pastor

    This month, Calvary Church of Los Gatos celebrates the 20th year of service by its senior pastor, Dr. Fred Wilson. Over the past two decades, Wilson has led the church through growth and change and helped create many new ministries as well as programs for the Los Gatos community. A celebration in his honor takes place March 7 at noon in Friesen Hall, following the church's Sunday morning services.

    After pastoring two churches in the Pacific Northwest, Wilson came to Los Gatos in 1979 to take the reins at Calvary Church. His ministry principle is that a church must understand the culture of its community, and within Biblical standards develop programs to address the needs of people in that community. Wilson is known for starting five innovative programs that are open to all, regardless of church membership. These are:

    * Club Edge, an after-school program for middle school students offering a supervised place to do homework, rest or socialize;

    * Real Life, a program designed to meet needs of young adults by way of a casual, coffeehouse-style atmosphere to "do church";

    * Youth Basketball League, which provides elementary school-age children with organized basketball games. More than 370 children are participating in the current season;

    * Kiddie Kampus, a licensed daycare facility that has recently expanded to include infant care;

    * Reaching for Life, an organization that uses electronic media to teach people who cannot physically attend a church due to distance, disability or other factors.

    Wilson holds a bachelor's degree in clinical psychology from Biola University, a master of divinity and doctor of ministry from Western Seminary and a doctor of divinity from Southwestern College.
