Wildcats win at Mt. Sac
By Dick Sparrer
Los Gatos isn't quite No. 1.
But you won't catch cross country coach Willie Harmatz complaining much about being No. 2.
The Wildcats finished second at the rugged Mt. Sac Invitational last weekend, running up 73 points to 62 for South Hills in the prestigious sweepstakes division for ranked teams. Don Bosco High was third at 85 with Redwood fourth at 86.
"This was not only our best overall team race of the season," said a proud Harmatz after his squad's showing in Los Angeles, "but it puts us No. 2 in the state right now."
Matt Bates and Russ Martin each landed in the top 10 to lead the Wildcats to the impressive finish. Bates covered the three miles in 15:51 to finish fifth overall, and Martin finished eighth in 16:01.
Tomas Viramontes ran 17th in 16:16 with Zack Regner 19th in 16:21, Jeff Hoeft 24th in 16:30, Greg Tolan 43rd in 17:14 and Darren Key 50th in 17:25.
"This race was a great confidence builder and a huge come-through performance by everyone on the team," said Harmatz.
The Gatos girls, meanwhile, finished first in the team standings at Mt. Sac, running in the regular team division. The Cats ran up a low 56 points to 75 for second-place Bonita.
Heather Hennessy led the effort by finishing first overall in 19:48 with Michelle Beritzhoff second in 19:50.
Lynsey Harris was 10th in 21:45, with Kate Leary 25th in 22:48 and Simone Drucker 38th in 23:07.
"We sure did great with the five [girls] we ran," said Harmatz. "It was a great win for us, leading into league finals."
The Wildcats will now prepare for the upcoming league finals set for Nov. 2 at Crystal Springs in Belmont.
In other Gatos action last weekend, Carolyn Penner ran ninth in 21:40 at the St. Francis Invitational at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.
Merin Clark was 10th in 21:41 with Theresa Rehder 14th in 22:11, Angela McBeath 19th in 22:38, Andie Knudsen 34th in 23:39, Brianna Chenevey 46th in 24:51 and Ariel Olgivie 107th in 28:38.
