Westmont opens CCS softball tourney; Warriors, Panthers in baseball playoffs

By Kevin Sparrer

The basic goal in softball is to score more runs than the other team, and the Westmont girls did it twice last week, outscoring their opponents 20-0 in the final two games of the league season.

The Warriors downed Santa Teresa 10-0 in the last game of the regular season on May 9 after downing Piedmont Hills 10-0 on May 7.

In the win over Piedmont, the Warriors rallied for 16 hits and held the Pirates to only one, thanks to the efforts of Christine Higgins' 1-hit shutout for her 14th win of the season.

At the plate it was Courtney Jordan and Gabby Villa who led the Warriors with four hits apiece. Jordan drove in two runs, and Villa had one RBI. Courtney Fong knocked a double and a triple and had one RBI, Jenny Bybee smacked a pair of hits and drove in two runs and Jacque Kuhny ripped a triple and had three RBIs. Kelli Retzer, Jessica Barrett and Higgins also had hits.

Westmont finished the season 8-6 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and take a 15-12-1 overall record into the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs. The Warriors, the No. 10 seed in the tourney, were to open against No. 7 Aragon (17-11-1) on May 15, with the winner to face No. 2 Presentation (26-4) on May 17, 10:45 a.m., at the Salinas Complex. That winner will advance to the semifinals at San Jose PAL Stadium.

Del Mar's softball team split its two games in the final week of the season, falling 2-0 to Branham on May 9, with Lauren Zweigle knocking the only hit, and defeating Prospect 10-0 on May 7.

Anna Myers led the offensive onslaught for the Dons against the Panthers, hammering out a homer and a single and driving in four runs. Kayla Worely ripped a double, while Jody Paxton, Adrianna Corpuz, Zweigle and Randi Robinson each had hits and drove in runs. Hilary Pardo, Amy Van Unen and Leslie Wilson all added hits in the win, and Nancy Villa-Gonzalez knocked in a run.

Del Mar finished the season 8-6 in the Santa Teresa Division and 13-9 overall.

Prospect's softball team fell twice in the final week, losing 10-0 to both the Dons and Oak Grove.

Prospect had a tough year, finishing 0-12 in the Santa Teresa Division and 0-19 overall.

Baseball

The Prospect baseball team had a shot at the title in the Santa Teresa Division but had a tough final week, falling in two straight games and missing the championship by two games. Prospect lost 5-2 to Sobrato on May 9 and 4-3 to Del Mar on May 7.

The Panthers still managed to reach the CCS Division II playoffs, though. As the No. 12 seed, Prospect took its 18-8-1 season record up against No. 5 Los Altos (20-10) on May 15. The winner will take on the No. 4 Los Gatos (20-14)-No. 13 Aragon (15-15) winner on May 17 at Washington Park in Santa Clara. That winner advances to the CCS semifinals on May 22 at San Jose Municipal Stadium.

Against Sobrato, Curtis Vanwaardenberg roped a double, but it was Alex Juull who smacked a single and drove in both runs for the Panthers. Brandon Willard and Brian Fischer each had hits in the loss.

In the loss to Del Mar, Juull knocked a hit and drove in two, and Nick Kinder doubled. Willard belted a single and drove in one and Kyle Peck, Michael Brown, Joel Palermo and Vanwaardenberg each singled.

Prospect finished the league season 16-5.

Westmont split its last two games of the season, defeating Leigh by forfeit on May 9 and falling 3-1 to Branham on May 7. The Warriors will join Prospect in the CCS Division II playoffs. Westmont, the No. 8 seed at 20-9, was to meet No. 9 Santa Clara (17-12) on May 15 with the winner facing the No. 1 Aptos (24-4)-No. 16 Branham (12-18) winner on May 17 at Washington Park.

Westmont was only able to knock four hits in the loss to the Bruins. Brian Scott smacked a pair of hits, and Cannon Bernarding ripped a single and drove in a run. David Messer also roped a hit in the loss.

The Warriors finished the regular season 13-8 in the Mt. Hamilton Division, which was enough to earn them third place in league.

Del Mar also split in the last week of the season, falling to Oak Grove 9-4 on May 9 but defeating Prospect 4-3 on May 7.

Thomas Johnson smashed a homer and a double for the Dons in the win over Prospect. Tyler Lopez had a pair of hits and two RBIs, and Cullen McGagin, Chase Spivey and Chris Emory each had hits.

In Del Mar's loss to the Eagles, Kevin Roeder led the offense with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Emory, Chris Henderson and Daniel Farias each ripped a hit.

Del Mar finished the season 8-13 in the Santa Teresa Division and 9-17-1 overall.
